And we work hard to contribute to it
The Bismarck-Mandan Civic Chorus' mission is to foster and develop the art of choral music for its members and the communities it serves. It is comprised of more than 90 members who reside in communities throughout the state.
The Chorus works to improve and develop a passion for choral music in Bismarck-Mandan and central North Dakota. The Chorus identifies artistic and cultural needs of a community and finds ways to address them.
A major way the Chorus has been able to reach the community is by conducting many concerts throughout the year which are geared towards these specific needs. An example of this is the Spring Concert which impacts child singers because it gives them the rare opportunity to sing with a full adult choir. The Spring Concert also impacts child artists, allowing them to showcase their talents through the annual art contest.
The Chorus hosts a "run-out" concert each year. This is performed for a rural community outside of the Bismarck-Mandan area that has limited exposure to professional-level choral music. The Chorus also performs with the school choir in that community.
Regularly, the Chorus performs with area children's choirs, including grade school choirs from the Bismarck-Mandan area. They also collaborate often with the Central Dakota Children's Choir. For many concerts, the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony and the Missouri Valley Chamber Orchestra partner with the Chorus and offer more diversified programs, broadening the audiences that attend.
The Chorus recognizes the importance of music education for children and hosts an opera education program prior to the Evening at the Opera concert. This education program is a partnership between the Chorus, Bismarck Public Schools and the Burleigh County Development Fund. It is designed to teach area fourth through seventh grade students about opera music, costumes, the organization of choir and the history of opera.
For people who would benefit from these concerts but are underprivileged or handicapped, the Chorus provides those citizens with complimentary tickets to each of its concerts, giving them the opportunity to experience music they otherwise would not have the chance to experience. Discounted ticket rates are also available to students and senior citizens.
To promote music throughout the community, the Civic Chorus makes its extensive library of choral music (nearly 800 titles) available at no cost to school, community and church choirs, enabling these groups to share in the rich tradition of quality literature.
The Bismarck-Mandan Civic Chorus is dedicated to helping its communities in any way it can to enrich people's lives through the promotion of choral music.
